In 1971 and 1972 I holidayed for a month at a time with my Parents at the old Colonial Chongoene Hotel Joao Belo. Mr D'Oliviera owned the Hotel then. It is wonderful to hear that it is to be refurbished after so many years of destruction caused by the War. We used to travel from Bulawayo, Rhodesia by train to Maputo and from there by bus to the Hotel. The highlight of my holidays there were our weekly visits to Joalo Belo with one of the Waiters in his Red Sports Car. Also there was an old rusted shipwreck about 1km on the north side of the Hotel stranded on the beach and at low tide we would clamber onto it and explore. Also collecting muscles at low tide and the Kitchen would cook them and deliver on a silver platter to our room before supper. So much I could tell you, from the shellfish delicacies and puddings to an influx of bats in the ceiling etc etc. I was only 14 years old - very impressionable age. What wonderful wonderful memories. gail@batechubb.co.za is very interested in buying Timeshare there.

I worked in a travel agency in Bulawayo in the mid 60s, and I visited the hotel on a sponsored trip just after it opened. I sent many guests there over the years and they always came back raving about the hotel, Mr D'Oliviera himself, the amount of food they had eaten and the inability to spend any money! I will never forget the plates of mussels that Mr D'Oliviera produced every evening to go with our sundowners! And the waves crashing under the hotel at high tide.

We spent our honeymoon at the hotel in 1965 and my wife knew Mr D'Oliviera from when he was manager at the Vilhancoulos Hotel. We also had a marvellous time enjoying the pre-dinner plates of mussels. I was so saddened to see the ruins of the hotel and am pleased to see that it will be re-invented.
